The mid-market rate versus what you'll pay

The mid-market rate, also called the interbank rate, is the midpoint between what banks buy and sell a currency for. It is the rate you see quoted on Google, XE, or this tool, and it is the fairest, most transparent benchmark available. It is almost never the rate you are actually offered when you send money, exchange cash, or pay abroad.

Banks and traditional money transfer operators build a markup directly into their exchange rate, often 2% to 5%, sometimes more, on top of any separate transfer fee they charge. This markup is easy to miss because it is baked into the rate itself rather than shown as a line-item fee. Online-first providers built around currency exchange tend to price closer to the true mid-market rate than traditional banks or airport kiosks do.
