How Unction Trade Was Born
Unction Trade was born out of a simple, frustrating gap. Major brokerage firms, the Robinhoods and Charles Schwabs of the world, have never really opened their doors to the African continent. A lot of it comes down to verification: these firms are not set up to handle the identity and residency checks required to onboard traders and investors across Africa's many different systems, so an entire continent gets left out of global markets almost by default.
Unction Trade exists to answer that gap. We started with free education and tools because knowledge has to come first, but the long-term vision is bigger than calculators: we want Unction Trade to grow into a brokerage that connects Africa directly to Wall Street, closing the access gap that firms like Robinhood and Schwab have left open.
And this is not only for Africans in the diaspora. It is for every person, on the continent and abroad, who wants to understand financial markets, move beyond the traditional savings account, and learn to turn saved money into invested money.
Our Mission
Unction Trade takes its name from 1 John 2:20, which speaks to the understanding believers carry and are meant to share. We see financial literacy the same way: knowledge that is meant to be passed on, not hoarded. Our mission is to teach, to impact, and to influence, starting with Africa's fast-growing economies and the diaspora, and growing into a global movement of people who understand how to build wealth through the markets.

Unction Trade is not just a set of calculators. We are building a full investing and financial education group: tools you can use today, articles and courses that explain the basics, a growing library of books beyond our first ("From Zero to Investor: The Complete Stock Market Guide for Beginners" is where most people start, not where the library ends), and, in time, direct market access itself. The long-term goal behind everything we build is the same: connect Africa to Wall Street.
Written By
Unction Trade is written and led by Maureen Akatunihiza, founder and CEO. Maureen is a tax lawyer who gained mastery in international tax at NYU School of Law, where she trained as a Hauser Global Scholar, and a trader with five years of continuous, active experience in the markets, trading options and futures.
That combination, legal training on one side and real market experience on the other, is what allows her to speak on both the trading side of investing and the tax side of it. Beyond writing and building the platform, Maureen also acts as Unction Trade's coach: someone members can turn to for guidance as they move from learning to actually investing, one-on-one, hand in hand.
